The Winter Light

The Winter Light: A Meditation on The Solstice

The Lights of Winter: Psalm 139

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me. May I receive your Light
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar. May You Light my path
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways. May Your Light guide my steps
Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely. May Rhema Light fall from my lips

You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me. Your hand is Light
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain. We cannot know where the Light comes from but we know that it comes

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence? You are Light
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. Your Light permeates all
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast. Your Light knows the WAY
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the Light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you. For you shine Light through what is darkness

13 For you created my inmost being;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb You placed Your Light within me.
14
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well. I know that we are One in the Light
15
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. You formed me with Light although I am flesh
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be. My days are written in the flames of your LIght
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you. Your Light will never depart from me for

all eternity

The Hour of Waiting

Stop the spinning wheel and pause

This still moment between

The dream and the cause

When the Winter opaque dims the sheen

Of the effervescent roses in the vase.

There is no time

Between my breath

In the stillness echo’s the wind chime

When white overcomes death

Letting go the cluttered mind

I pause in the darkness

I embrace the Light

Allowing in all the colors of Oneness

The rays of illuminated sight

Shining above, below, behind the stillness

The Alaf and the Zod

Within and upon this night

In my heart the gift you hold

This inner sight sees only Light

As I chose Your Hand for my abode

I ponder the seeds I shall plant

Seeing in the harvest of deepest desire

The dreams and visions Rhema chants

Bringing in the green within the mire

Without the mud the root can’t

The Light before me

The Light behind me

The Light all around me

The Light before you

The Light behind you

The Light all around you

The Light before us

The Light behind us

The Light all around us.
